Chapter Seventeen

Whether you see yourself on a map, in a room full of numbered doors, or in a maze, the journey of success can begin anywhere you happen to be in life. ‘Somewhere’ can be right where you are, at this very moment…

A couple of years ago, I participated in a local event as a vendor. At this event, there was a raffle spearheaded by another local business vendor, who agreed to provide free video production and commercial broadcasting on a local cable channel for the raffle winner. On that day, a very deserving business owner won the raffle. I can remember how excited and overcome with emotion this young lady C.E.O. was about being a recipient of this prize. She stated how this prize had come at the right time, as she was struggling to raise proper awareness and financial support for her organization that focused on the literacy success of inner-city youth. Several weeks later, I crossed paths with this same young lady, and when I inquired about her commercial, to my surprise, she stated that not only had no commercial been produced, but the business had not returned any of her calls. I could tell that she was very disappointed.

As we continued to chat, sitting across from each other at a banquet table, I noticed that she had a touch screen ‘Smart Phone’ similar to one that I owned. Ironically, a week prior, I shot my own commercial video, promoting an upcoming event using my touch screen ‘Smart Phone’. I immediately asked, “Why don’t you make your own commercial?” She gave me a perplexed look at first, but that changed when I explained how simple and effective of a task it was to use my smart phone’s HD quality video camera to record, publish, blast, and track my commercial online.

Sometimes, using what you have and starting somewhere, is the exact remedy to accomplishing major business goals on a shoestring budget. Of course, it also helps to research and gather information before attempting to complete a project that most would pay professionals to do. In my case of novice broadcasting success, I produced a 2-minute video in my living room, using my bedroom lamps, filtered with printing paper to create appropriate lighting. With my smartphone I shot a masterpiece that had far superior visual and audio quality than I expected! Since it was a short video shot with one take, it did not need editing, although the ‘App Stores’ offer several video editing applications if needed. Once completed, I uploaded the video to my YouTube channel, and copied and shared its’ link on several social media sites and generated e-blasts. My video reached hundreds of people and was easily tracked by the YouTube viewer counter, which in my opinion, was effective and offered great marketing flexibility.

It’s quite okay to dream big and gaze at the ‘big picture’, however, keep in mind that if you don’t take the time to see the intricacies of the vernacular, you can easily overlook ingenious opportunities and resources to accomplish goals using what you already have, where you currently exist. From what I call ‘Big Picture Syndrome”, yields the process of setting unrealistic goals that have a tendency to diminish with the same intensity as they were developed. Have you ever experienced a feeling of being overwhelmed and anxious when it came time to develop a plan for your idea? Have you ever experienced how one simple idea can evolve into a multifaceted, confusing concept? Sometimes ‘keeping it simple’ is the best approach when attempting to follow through. In order to have true, measurable progress, proper planning and practical application are keys for success. Simplicity sometimes enables us to define a clear starting point, and with drive, an idea can potentially be born before the window of enthusiasm and opportunity closes. www.JavayJohnson.com
